Question by : What can we do to seal our flooring?
Ok, the room we live in was added on to our roommates/house owner’s house before they bought it. It was VERY crappily built. So just about every time it rains, our room floods and we have to move ALL our stuff into the garage and sleep there for a few nights until our room dries. Unfortunately our roommates just got puppies! So they have taken over the garage now, and its covered in pee and poop, so we can no longer move in there to avoid the flood water.

The owner of the house/oldest roommate said there’s no point in sealing the room and to not do it. We later found our that they’re tearing down our room in June and rebuilding another one correctly for their parents/grandparents. However, what are we supposed to do now?

For now I am lining the room with my boyfriends and my clothes, however its only preventing some water. I don’t have much clothes to begin with, so this is kinda bad for me. We ARE going to move asap, however I need a job to do this. My boyfriends paycheck cant pay for EVERYTHING.

Basically the water comes in where the floor and wall meet, which leaves me to believe the room needs to be sealed. However, in some spots, in between the floor boards, water seeps up if ANY pressure is applied.

So my questions:
*Do we need to seal the room, or is it another problem?
*How do we fix the leaks coming from inbetween the flood boards in the middle of the room?
*What is the name of a decent sealant that we could buy at WalMart or Home Depot? How much?
*What else can we do?

And please, dont tell me to tell the roommates to pay for it, cause they refuse to. We’ve tried.
We had 3 rows of rolled up towels and it didn’t work. Fabrics get saturated with water.

We’re trying to move, but I need the job first, can’t do anything until then. Hmm maybe I should dig a trench/moat so the water goes into that first. Roommates wouldn’t like that..

There’s isn’t anything to do?

Best answer:

Answer by W
Go to walmart, buy a bunch of cheap towels and roll them up and put them all along the baseboards where the water is coming in. and spread some out over the floor.

Question by Tim D: What is the best strategy for replacing a linoleum flooring with ceramic tile, in a basement?
I’ve done tile floors before, but not quite like this situation. It is currently a linoleum or vinyl flooring, on top of concrete in our basement. I believe the floor is level and true. My question is if I need to rip up the linoleum first, or if I can go right on top of it. If I rip it up, what is the easiest way to get it off (it is really stuck down good)? If I don’t rip it up, how do I ensure I won’t have any adhesion problems down the road?

This is a very high-traffic area (our entry-way from the garage). We tried covering it with a peel-n-stick vinyl, which only lasted a few months. As soon as the concrete started getting cold, and the area started getting wet from the kids’ snow boots, pieces started to come loose.

Best answer:

Answer by T.J.
You definintely need to rip up the linoleum,
They have a machine at your local rental center that will rip up linoleum. It is well worth it to go rent one.

After you tear off all the linoleum some mastic, glue, or paper backing, may remain. You can tile over this as long as it is firmly adheared to the floor. Use a high quality thinset mortor. Stay away from premixed motor or cheap mortor mixes.

Question by imwright: Need flooring advice to cover concrete.?
We have taken in our garage as a large family room and building another garage. The floor is concrete painted with epoxy. It will be a high traffic area so I do not want carpet. I don’t really want tile but have not ruled it out completely. I am concerned about the durability of genuine hard woods but don’t care for the look of some of the laminate flooring. We were thinking engineered hardwood but then have heard mixed reviews about putting down floating vs glue down and a lot of the nice laminates and engineered hardwoods cost as much as the real deal. What is the best thing for over sealed concrete that can take the traffic?
The epoxy should prevent moisture from coming up through the concrete.

Best answer:

Answer by iroquois_92
you can get fake timber flooring that looks like it’s real and you just stick it down on the concrete.stick downs are alot better, i have them in a high traffic area. and to wash them just normal hot water with detergent & any mop.

This home on Mercer Island utilizes the elemental natures of concrete, steel and glass to create a family refuge. Two concrete structures, which house the garage, mudroom, and a play area, present themselves to the street. Between them runs an exposed steel bridge which leads over a private courtyard and into the main house. A bent plate steel staircase descends into an open plan, double-height living space, which is dominated by an immense concrete fireplace and chimney (in the living room) and a massive black granite-covered island (in the kitchen). Floor to ceiling windows provide unimpeded views of the water from the courtyard or inside the house.

Question by Fisher: Epoxy flooring on countertops?
I recently bought a house which has the original torganol countertops. they need to be replaced badly, but I am a little short on funds. I have been thinking of sanding the counter tops too roughen the surface and smoothout some uneven places and then coating them with an epoxy that is used to cover concrete floors in garages etc. I wouldn’t plan on this being a permanent fix but it might do until we can replace the counter tops. Would this be feasable or would it turn out to be a disaster?

Question by GSFKNR: Garage Flooring Paint? Epoxy?
Hi There,

I live in CA and I have a 40 year old garage concrete floor which is not cracked and in relatively good condition. However, there are stains from battery acid, oil and just general stains all over. I am quite picky and its not very pleasing to eye and I would like to cover it up.

I have seen garage floor paint, epoxy and other finishes that I can apply. I am fairly handy, but don’t have any scrubbing or etching tools. Only the basics (drills, vacuumms, saws, etc.). What do you recommend?

First: Epoxy or just paint?
Second: Hire or do it myself?

any suggestions, tips or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by nreeltime@yahoo.com
First a degreaser available at Lowe`s or other hardware stores. Follow directions, making it as concentrated as possible. Second you can etch it with a solution of 50% muratic acid(caution) and 50% water. Mix it up in a pump up yard sprayer, spray over floor (if possible, this is very corrosive),let it work for about 5 minutes. Then hose off THOROUGHLY! Let dry.I have seen a roof sealer called Elastomeric it dries kinda rubbery, last forever, and is a non slip finish. Hope this helps. TY

Working in the garage is passion for some people. And it is so for a number of reasons. You use this room if you want to build crafts or repair items around the house. And primarily because the garage is the place where carpentry and related tasks are done, the floor coating and other flooring ideas you use must be durable enough. When choosing, you should consider the style and the layout of your home as well. You might want to have your garage go well your house’s theme. Comfort is a big factor when making a decision as to which to use too. Go for paints and other flooring ideas that allow you to work easily and effortlessly.

Aside from that, using floor paint for your garage adds value to your home. This is why it is such a sound investment to make. You will definitely reap the benefits of such an addition in the long run.

If you like to modify your car or do some repairs on it, you know for a fact that the job can be messy one. If this is what you like to do inside your garage, you have to choose a floor paint that allows for a quick clean-up of oil, grease, and stains on the flooring. If you can easily clean the surface, then you can work on your car without getting concerned as to how your garage would look right after.

Without floor paints, garages can be considered as the most boring places of a house. Concrete cracks and stains over time. Bare concrete is not attractive either. If you are going to sell your house and show it to a prospective buyer, you’d like him or her to be impressed with every part of the room, including the garage. If the surface is painted or is covered with floor mats or tiles, then your property will become a real standout.

There are different choices for garage floor paints. There are also a lot of other flooring ideas you can use. It is your duty to determine what will work for you best. You might need to do some preliminary work on the concrete to make it ready for the paint or the other ideas of your choice. Seal cracks first if you’ll use paint or mats. If you are going to use tiles, choose the one that won’t easily break even if you drop something as hard and heavy as a hammer.

As people upgrade their homes or complete home projects, they are always looking for something else to improve. The latest trend is to spruce up their garage. The garage is slowly becoming more than just a place to store boxes and tools, or toss your recycling until your next trip to the recycling center. It is becoming a central place for activities. I think some of this has to do with the fact that a lot of new homes look roomy from the outside, but are not. They have small rooms, little storage and restrictive floor space. Enough for basic living, but not room for extra activities. People are looking for space for do-it-yourself projects, wood working, play space for the kids, a work out area or just some space for a bit of piece and quiet. So you don’t want it to just look like a garage with a concrete floor that has been framed in. Many people, and often new homes built today, do take the first step of putting up dry wall. This makes a big difference in the look of the garage, but the concrete floor still gives it a cold feeling. But you don’t have to settle for a cold concrete floor, there are other options in the form of easy-to-install garage flooring.

Garage flooring serves a couple of purposes. Not only do they make your garage look better by covering up old and cracked floors, but they also protect concrete floors from corrosive materials such as antifreeze, oil and salt. So even if you are just using your garage to store your car, dry wall and garage flooring can increase the value of your home for resale.

Some options to improve your garage floor is to paint or seal it with an epoxy coating. But these are fairly labor intensive, require prep of the floor as well as proper application – primarily for an epoxy coating. But one of the great thing about garage flooring is the ease in which it can be installed. Most garage flooring comes as interlocking or as peel and stick tiles. They can often be laid in just one or two days, and require a minimum of tools. Normally you just need a measuring tape, a utility knife to cut down any tiles that overlap and a pair of kneepads for comfort. And, you can lay them at any time of the year, you are not controlled by temperature like when you paint or epoxy.

Most tiles are either made of rubber or vinyl, both are durable and work well. The are resistant to cracking, chipping and pealing and are easy to maintain. You can sweep, vacuum or hose them down. The are also immune to the adverse affects of grease, oil, battery acid and other chemicals that can damage a concrete floor. They are designed to withstand the weight of even the heaviest vehicles, and securely stay in place.

Many come in a variety of textures and designs, including ribbed, diamond, levant and coin patterns. Or for a high end, professional look, you can use checkered tile flooring such as seen in some show rooms and high end mechanics. This gives you a real custom look, you can checker yellow and black, blue and white, red and gray etc. What if you have a drain in your garage floor that you need to which you need to maintain access? This is also not a problem. Drain tiles are available that have open grates to allow access to floor drains while maintaining a uniform surface height across the floor.

Garage flooring is a great way to spruce up your garage, increase your home value, and create a more comfortable living space that can be used for a variety of purpose. For a reasonable price, and a quick weekend project, you can accomplish much with by laying garage flooring.

What could be more exciting than garage flooring? I mean, is there anything else? The plethora of color and texture options just takes the breath away. Not! Okay, seriously though, I’m pretty sure that garage flooring isn’t really even meant to be exciting. It’s meant to be more in the functional category. I know most people think of the garage floor as the drab gray concrete that it usually is, but I’m here to tinker with that perception.

It turns out that there is a whole industry built on the idea that garage flooring doesn’t have to be lame, bla, or ugly. In fact, manufacturers have gone out of their way to come up with products that not only enhance the way the floor looks, but also add to it’s functionality and safety. You can get large rolled flooring, peel and stick tiles, interlocking tiles, anti-fatigue mats and more. Let me explain.

One of the garage flooring products that I personally like is a 12 in. x 12 in. peel and stick tile that can be laid down on top of cracked and stained concrete. This is an inexpensive option that works well to dramatically improve the appearance of garages, shops, and other work areas. It can be custom fit to nearly any space and reduces noise, while at the same time cuts down on the amount of dirt that is tracked indoors. It comes in a variety of colors: black, white, and gray. You can also find it with different tread patterns: diamond and levant.

If you would rather have an interlocking tile that requires no adhesive, that is available as well. Gladiator makes a heavy duty interlocking tile that is perfect for those who need garage flooring that can handle heavy vehicle weights. It is rated up to 250 lbs. per square inch.

Another really durable and convenient garage flooring product that works great is called G-Floor. It comes as a rolled stock product that is simply laid down. Since there is no need for adhesives, it makes installation a breeze. You can find this product in different patterns (ribbed, clear, coin, tread, and levant) and sizes. Common sizes include 7.5 ft. wide x 17 ft. long (covers about 127.5 sq. ft.), 7.5’ x 20’ (covers about 150 sq. ft.), or 9’ x 20’ (covers about 180 sq. ft.). G-Floor is easy to move when cleaning is needed, can be custom fit, is ultra durable, and prevents concrete, soil, and water contamination. Creative use of different color tiles can also make garage flooring fun. I’m thinking checkerboard here.

So now that you know a bit more about garage flooring, are you excited about what you could do with that drab old nasty stained concrete? It makes sense to do something with it. After all, the garage is one of the biggest rooms in the house. Go on, live on the edge. Do something for yourself. Get some new garage flooring and see what a difference it makes. You’ll be glad you did.
