Question by witchywoman: I have an old dresser, circa 1930-40. I need to clean it up?
My late father-in-law gave me his mother’s dresser. My step mother-in-law stored it in a garage with dirt floors. It has absorbed water in the legs, broken pieces from the mirror. It’s covered in dirt and mud dauber nests. I don’t know where to start the cleaning process. Help!

Best answer:

Answer by pat7770
You could use a plastic pan scrubber to brush off the nests. Use something like Murphy’s Oil soap to clean the rest of it. Pull the drawers out and rub wax (an old candle would do) on the parts that slide and the places they rest. If it’s valuable you haven’t done any damage. If it’s not valuable and you just want to paint it, wash it off with soap and a little water, rinse and dry, sand lightly and paint. If it smells funny, put some bars of soap in each drawer. shouldn’t be hard to remove the mirror frame and either cover it with cork and use it for your photos, or have a new mirror put in or leave it off. anyway, Have fun.

Question by Taylor: How do you clean a flooded basement?
My water heater decided to floodmy basement this morning and it left a huge mess. I managed to get the water heater to stop leaking, but the floor is still covered in water. On top of that there is a very persistent chipmunk in my garage that doesn’t want to come out, so I am not in a very good mood right now. If you know of an easy way to clean it that would not drive me over the edge it would be much appreciated.

Best answer:

Answer by Daniel White
wet/dry shop vac is the only way to go! As for the squirrel…..well, try to lure him outside with food after you dry up the basement.

Please Buy Eunie’s Car
This post is way out of the usual for Madang – Ples Bilong Mi. I’m afraid that it’s not going to be of much interest to most readers. I won’t apologise, since I have to do it. I’ll be back later with something more interesting. I didn’t have much fun writing this, so I need to entertain myself also.

Since I seem to have fallen on hard times lately, I’m forced to think and do things which were formerly unthinkable and un-doable. One of those unthinkable things is to sell, as quickly as possible, an object (just at thing, I keep reminding myself) with which I never imagined parting. That thing is Eunie’s car.

I’ve always thought of it as Eunie’s car, because I’ve never personally known a woman who was as eager to spend so much time working on a car. I did a lot of the mechanical stuff, but Eunie’s passion was the cockpit – "Hey, this is where I sit. It’s got to be nice!", she’d say. There is a bumper sticker still hanging on the wall in her former office that says, "I ♥ My Spitfire."

So, my good friend Steve Hassfurder, with the help of friends, has gotten the Spit out of the garage of the house which I must sell before it drags me into the bottomless pit. He got it started and tells me that it runs fine, as I expected it would.

I’ve been fretting (my hobby) concerning how I can get the news out that the car is for sale. It dawned on me only today that my largest audience is right here on MPBM. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. So, with no further self-pity, here is the text and photos which I prepared to send to Steve:

1973 Triumph Spitfire 1500

A Little History
We purchased this car in 1986. I drove it back and forth to work while we were stuck in the USA for twenty months. When we moved back to Papua New Guinea we decided to keep it stored in the garage of a house we owned in Brownsburg, Indiana. Beginning with our first extended stay back here in the USA, we decided to start to restore the car. During periods when the car was not in the workshop we used it as our daily vehicle. The car is very beautiful and in excellent condition. There is no rust. The body has been completely restored from the metal out. The engine, drive train and suspension are all completely restored with many new parts. There is no play in the steering and the car is a joy to drive.

A Partial List of Restorations and Improvements (the ones I can remember)

Body
GM “Torch Red” with matching wheels
Restored from metal out with no rust anywhere
New floor pans
New lower front panel (lower doghouse)
Ugly rear fender join seams removed

Interior and trim
New carpeting throughout the cockpit
New upholstery and cushions on seats
Brazilian Rosewood dashboard
Dashboard upper and glove tray have new covering
New windshield
New folding convertible top
Pioneer stereo system (four speaker) with 10 CD changer Electrical
New fuse box
All electricals restored – everything works!
New Mallory distributor
New battery

Running gear
Larger radiator with dual thermostatically controlled cooling fans
New Holly two barrel carburettor and new alloy intake manifold
New tubular steel header pipes for exhaust
Rebuilt alternator
New “street performance” camshaft, new valves and springs
New high compression pistons (stock Triumph parts), rings, wrist pins, connecting rods and bearings
New crankshaft and bearings
New clutch
Transmission completely rebuilt (no sync problems on 2nd gear)
New front brakes and new rotors – rear brakes completely rebuilt
New half-shafts and bearings for the independent rear suspension
New rear shock absorbers and new rear leaf spring (no “Spitfire squat”)
New front wheel bearings
Front suspension, steering and shock absorbers all new or rebuilt with new parts – no steering play!
New exhaust system with stock Spitfire muffler
New tires when last serviced

It is very hard to find an earlier Spitfire, one made before the appearance of the car was ruined by regulations, in this condition. For beauty, ’73 was the finest year for “Spits”. One could easily justify a price of ,000 for this car, considering the cost of putting one in this condition. I am asking ,000. I will consider other offers. Please contact me.

Question by Bobby R: Should I clean my garage floor for my upcoming pool party (read details below on why I am asking)?
I plan on having a pool party at my house. I don’t have a covered deck outdoors, so I am planning on putting the food (buffet style) and beer in the garage for people to serve themselves (My wife doesn’t want everyone coming in and out of the house with wet swimwear on.).

The problem is that when I walk in the garage in my bare feet for 3 minutes, the soles of my feet get black and dirty. Do you think I should try and clean the garage floor or do you think people won’t really care because it is a pool party and everyone will be just chillin’?

If you think I should clean it, what can I use? It is made of smooth unfinished concrete.
I’m not too worried about the pool getting dirty. There’s probably 7500 gallons of water in it. Even if a pound of dirt got into the pool, you wouldn’t even notice. Plus, the filter is always cleaning the water.

Reading about garage flooring was probably not at the top of your list of things to read about today. I don’t know why. It’s a subject that men have philosophized about, nations have gone to war over, and future generations will no doubt debate for centuries to come. Seriously though, while garage flooring may be the penultimate topic for some, for most it is something that just escapes their radar completely. Most just don’t think about it at all. At the end of a long work day, most just want to come home, open the garage door, drive in, park the car, go in and relax. It is likely that at some point in every homeowners life there will come a moment when the subject rises to the surface. At that critical, precious juncture nobody’s eternal salvation is on the line, but the future usefulness and enjoyment of your garage does come into focus. With that special moment in mind, I am going to give you some ideas and options about garage flooring that probably won’t alter the course of your life, but will certainly improve the enjoyment of it.

You don’t have to resign yourself to a life of dirty and stained concrete any more. If given the choice between an oil stained concrete floor and stylish tiled or matted garage flooring, what would you prefer? Obviously, the answer has to be the tiled or an otherwise covered floor. While oil has its place and its quite attractive in certain settings (I’m thinking of that magical moonlit night when you and your significant other spill out a little oil or gas on the sidewalk, add a bit of water, and watch in amazement and wonder as the light spectrum comes alive in the petrol paradise), in most it just isn’t a wanted element. We all prefer clean and neat.

As a garage flooring expert, I can tell you that having a messy stained floor is not an inevitable part of owning a garage. There are many options out there that you can purchase to cover the garage floor. Any number of these will simply do away with this most pesky problem. Being able to clean up spills, or even replace flooring completely is a simple solution to one of the biggest complaints people seem to have about their garage flooring.

Garage flooring also doesn’t have to be drab and boring either. I get it that some people really do prefer to just leave things alone. They like gray and have no plans to change a thing. That’s fine. However, for the more adventurous souls out there I want to introduce you to a big bold colorful world of options and textures. Companies like Gladiator make a great line of products that allow you to literally tile your garage floor with any number of different colors and textures. Remember those fun black and white textured floors from the 50′s? Imagine how fun it would be to bring such creativity to your own garage flooring. Blue, black, white, red, and yes, gray, are all there for you to mix and match at will to create a truly customized floor in your garage. These 1′ square tiles interlock and provide a durable and sharp looking surface that can withstand the load placed on them by cars and trucks. They are designed to resist stains that are often found in the garage as a result of spills and mishaps, drips and drops. The nicest thing about this option is that you don’t have to mess around with goops and epoxies or concrete paint. Just install and enjoy. And all without a drop of blood spilt in anger, or an angry word uttered.

This is just one of the great options in garage flooring available. Take a look around to see what you like best, and you will discover many great options to your grease stained concrete floor.
