Why high heals on ice?

January 27th, 2012

Question by George McCasland – Dads Rights: Why high heals on ice?
Okay, I know I’m an old fart male, so I’m not suppose to know the why about some things in life, nature, and society, but as a cab driver, I see so many women wearing high heals when they know it’s going to be hard walking in regular shoes. It’s icy here in Kansas City, ice everywhere, yet I see young woman (and some old) wearing these impossible shoes while trying to negotiate a sidewalk covered in ice. Isn’t not getting your neck, or ankle, broke more important than appearance?

I will say that I did have two female customers who were going home from a bar. They were just a little drunk. They did fine in their high heals, getting across the ice, and to the cab. Once home, the entered the house through the garage, so they had to get across the ice to the garage door and get it open. It was not until they stepped onto the dry floor of the garage before they slipped and fell. They were not hurt, except perhaps their pride, and the bruises on their bums the next morning.

What can we do to seal our flooring?

January 25th, 2012

Question by : What can we do to seal our flooring?
Ok, the room we live in was added on to our roommates/house owner’s house before they bought it. It was VERY crappily built. So just about every time it rains, our room floods and we have to move ALL our stuff into the garage and sleep there for a few nights until our room dries. Unfortunately our roommates just got puppies! So they have taken over the garage now, and its covered in pee and poop, so we can no longer move in there to avoid the flood water.

The owner of the house/oldest roommate said there’s no point in sealing the room and to not do it. We later found our that they’re tearing down our room in June and rebuilding another one correctly for their parents/grandparents. However, what are we supposed to do now?

For now I am lining the room with my boyfriends and my clothes, however its only preventing some water. I don’t have much clothes to begin with, so this is kinda bad for me. We ARE going to move asap, however I need a job to do this. My boyfriends paycheck cant pay for EVERYTHING.

Basically the water comes in where the floor and wall meet, which leaves me to believe the room needs to be sealed. However, in some spots, in between the floor boards, water seeps up if ANY pressure is applied.

So my questions:
*Do we need to seal the room, or is it another problem?
*How do we fix the leaks coming from inbetween the flood boards in the middle of the room?
*What is the name of a decent sealant that we could buy at WalMart or Home Depot? How much?
*What else can we do?

And please, dont tell me to tell the roommates to pay for it, cause they refuse to. We’ve tried.
We had 3 rows of rolled up towels and it didn’t work. Fabrics get saturated with water.

We’re trying to move, but I need the job first, can’t do anything until then. Hmm maybe I should dig a trench/moat so the water goes into that first. Roommates wouldn’t like that.. :(

There’s isn’t anything to do?

Go to walmart, buy a bunch of cheap towels and roll them up and put them all along the baseboards where the water is coming in. and spread some out over the floor.

Renters Question: Am I Out Of Luck Here?

January 24th, 2012

Question by guardianofthemoon: Renters Question: Am I Out Of Luck Here?
Ok, I just moved into a house that I am renting. I have 3 daughters. When we moved in the landlord insisted there would be a stove and fridge, as I am having a difficult time, that was a concern of mine.He did tell me that he was going to replace the existing stove and fridge with other ones, his exact words were “We can do you one better” and I told him after moving in that we were very happy with the ones we had, and that we would prefer to keep them, yet he insisted.

So Saturday, he has some guys come and take the old ones out. Now, he tells me that in total this move will take an hour max, so to put my food on ice and it should be fine. Well, the guys come and don’t come back for 4 hours, I lost everything I had. At least $ 100 worth of food, and my income can not sustain that at this time.

When “his boys” do show up, the stove is older but it’s fine, it works yeah! But the fridge is disgusting. First, it came out of his garage and is covered with mold all around the door edges, I took bleach and tried to clean it, but to my dismay it won’t come off. I called him, he basicaly tells me that this is what I agreed to, and as to the food, sorry about my luck.

I was furious and hurt. I sent him an email stating that unless he would like me to take the rent money and buy a new fridge, he better give me a) either the old one back or b)supply me with one that was just as good.

Now, my question is, am I in the right to withhold rent for this situation. It is awful and no one would want to eat what comes out of this fridge. Here we are with the holidays coming up, and I have no way to store food. A new fridge is going to cost a lot, and even if I buy a used one, it is still going to cost me.

Does anyone else have any alternate suggestions. Or, am I doing the right thing? PS> this crappy fridge is also leaking water all over the floor. Really it is unusable.
Thanks

You dont have the right to withhold rent. He will sue & win. However, if u were to sue then maybe u could get that money back, but that again costs money & time. The funny thing is, u didnt really “agree” to new fridge he insisted. Its not right but if u just withhold rent youll be even worse off. Heres what I think he did. He wanted that fridge & stove for his own place & swapped them & made it seem like u were getting an upgrade. He scammed u. Find a new place & move out.
